As we wind down our busiest year ever, it seems like a perfect time to reflect back on the previous 12 months and be proud of all that we have accomplished. Often in our social media posts we focus on the lavish corporate events we DJed, or the all-night dance party weddings we crushed. Seldom do we take time to recognize the functions that may not have been the most high-profile, but had a lasting impact on guests and vendors, while helping our community in more ways than one. Here is a spotlight on the 10 that stood out; not to brag or boast, but rather to bring attention to some very worthy causes, while giving a shout out to our amazing team.
March 6th, Holiday Inn Toronto Airport – The Canadian Special Olympics Team held a send-off dinner the night before the athletes and coaches headed to Abu Dhabi to participate in the World Games. Special doesn’t begin to describe what it’s like to be part of this group of athletes. This night made us proud to be Canadian in a way that we’ve never felt before. Go Canada Go!
May 5th, Boyd Conservation Area – The Kids Help Phone Walk So Kids Can Talk is an event we have been DJing annually since 2016. Ben has been our DJ of choice for this one, mixing classic crowd pump up songs with current hits and 90s classics. Thousands gather every year to march to his beats along the nature paths, and then finish with a celebratory dance party. “We have used DJ Floh Back Productions every year for many years at our annual Walk so Kids Can Talk sites. They are easy to work with, and they know how to pump up the crowd!” – Maisie Leong, KHP
June 8th, Markham Civic Centre – ALS Double Play is an organization founded to raise money to help irradiate the disease which is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Earl lay down the soundtrack for the crowd at this years’ 5K International Walk For ALS. “The day was great and Earl was awesome. He made all the announcements we asked him to and played good family friendly music.” – Cherrie-Marie Chiu, ALS
June 26th, Rockcliffe Middle School – When a teacher from this inner city school contacted us she said “90 percent of our kids come from low income homes. Our grades 8’s are graduating this year and I am trying to arrange donations for the day. If you can help us out and make dreams come true for our graduates please let me know.” Earl stepped up and volunteered to DJ the dance for free. We can’t show photos of the kids, but we can share their thank you letter. “I would like to thank you for your generous donation for our grad. Our students were so grateful, it was a day they will always remember. Without your support, we would not be able to offer out students this celebration of their accomplishments.” – Laura Stoikos, Principal RMS
September 14th, National Yacht Club – Broad Reach Foundation gives the experience of sailing to youth from vulnerable communities. The programs combine leadership and life skills development through sail training – a unique model seldom accessible to this population. We were honoured to be called on to DJ the fundraising regatta, and learn about this worthy organization in the process. “Danny and team, thank you so much for being a part of our special day. It was an honour to partner with you and we look forward to working with DJ FlohBack in the future.” – Evan Bradley, BRF
September 14th, Camp Wanakita – SHE Getaways are designed to provide a place where women can find the perfect space to take time for themselves. For health, fitness, laughter, growth, reflection, renewal and change. We have been the DJs for the final night party for several years, but 2019 was the best yet, Adrien declaring this his favourite #TeamFlohBack party to date. “Honestly it was so incredible! Adrien is a total pro, everyone LOVED it!!!” – Kim Smith, Reebok Crossfit
October 7th, Arcadian Court – La Tablée des Chefs‘ mission is to feed people in need and to develop culinary education for youth. We jumped at the chance to be part of this one, with a cause very close to our own hearts. Diverting food waste from landfill and on to plates of those in need is a topic finally being addressed successfully, thanks to this organization. The Grande Tablée dinner gala was, in essence, a Toronto launch party to a room full of celebrity chefs and foodie royalty. “La Tablée des Chefs was very pleased to join hands with DJ Flohback to provide a good mix of relaxed and high energy music for our inaugural launch event. They were very professional and adapted easily to our needs and any last minute changes we needed to make. It was a pleasure to work with them!” – Rolie Srivastava, TdC
November 15th, Fairmont Royal York – For the past 50 years, Special Olympics has been helping children, youth and adults with an intellectual disability reach their potential through daily community and competitive sports programs. the annual LIMITLESS gala is the party to be at for anyone in the sports world, and we’ve now been DJing the event for more years than we can count. This one was highlighted by a young athlete named Brandon VanSickle, who co-DJed the cocktail hour with Danny. Brandon was also the keynote speaker, delivering a motivation address to a standing ovation. Watch the video HERE.
November 17th, Bloor Street – Here comes Santa Claus! For years we have been proud to DJ the most festive race around, the annual Holly Jolly Fun Run. 45 minutes before the start of the 115th Annual Toronto Santa Claus Parade, runners and Christmas enthusiasts have the opportunity to race down the parade route and get cheered on by hundreds of thousands of parade-goers, finishing at Maple Leaf Square. Ben & Danny were proud to keep the crowd warm at the start line and kicking off the run, before getting out of the way for the big guy.
December 8th, St. Michael’s Hospital – This was our third year as part of Conor & Caleb’s Holiday Extravaganza, a children’s party for the Inner City Pediatric Clinic at St. Michael’s Hospital. This event is in honour of organizer Tanya’s two beautiful twin boys who were born prematurely and left us too soon. The event has been a huge hit with the clinic kids. The majority of the moms that use the Pediatric Clinic at St. Mike’s for their children are homeless, HIV positive, addicted to drugs, etc. and many of the kids are in the custody of Children’s Aid Society or from families well below the poverty line.
While we rock the holiday tunes, Disney Princesses and Marvel superheroes come to meet all the kids. Some activities on the agenda were decorating gingerbread houses, decorating cookies, build-a-stuffed toy, personalizing stockings, ornament making and so much more! Could there be any better event to end the year on?
